Prolegomenon and Other Random Thoughts
I’m going to hit you with the marketing spiel on this one because I honestly don’t have much to add to the context around this beefy boy.
Ocean Breeze is a cigar created to reflect the softer, more calming side of Costa Rican craftsmanship. Inspired by the local Pura Vida lifestyle, it’s designed to offer a moment of ease—an experience shaped by balance, smooth progression, and naturally refined flavors. This cigar represents one of the most distinctive expressions in the Lampert Cigars portfolio.
So there you have it. I spent a week down in Oyster Bay, Jamaica for vacation this summer, so I guess we’ll see if this cigar is truly irie or if it’s just a mash-up. Ya mon!

The Review
This review for the Lampert Ocean Breeze - Gran Toro (6.5 x 56) is based on the journal entry dated 2026-07-13
Appearance & Construction (0-3): Good (3)
I do love a proper Gran Toro vitola. Yes, yes, yes, I’ll espouse the virtues of the Gran Corona and Lancero all day, but there’s a beautiful physical balance to the 6.5″ x 56 size when you’re over six feet tall. For the large-hands crowd, it just feels right. Anyway, this is a large, handsome, and understated cigar that has a quiet coolness to it—just like our good friend Big Rob over at LACC. The aged Ecuadorian Criollo wrapper is a warm chocolate-brown with hints of orange, carrying a nice sheen that leaves a slightly oily residue on your fingers. It’s quite toothy too, with a number of relatively large teeth giving it a somewhat coarse texture. It’s a little bumpy from the binder layer, but the veins are thin and the seams are tight with a clean triple cap. The silver and black bands, featuring blue stylized lines representing the ocean breeze, are a very nice touch. It’s a simple band, but it looks good. Though I do question the LAMPERTCIGARS printed in all caps without a space. I can’t help but think of Will Ferrell as Jacob Silj on SNL, the newscaster who suffers from voice immodulation and can’t control his volume. 😂
Draw (0-3) & Burn (0-4): Good (3) / Average (2)
Using the punch, the draw is perfect on this cigar and it lights up without any drama. The ash is a medium gray that’s absolutely covered with oil crystals. It is a little flaky with tightly layered striations and wide cracks that look like a stack of pancakes. The ash ultimately falls without warning late in the first third, so I highly advise making sure to gracefully roll it off more often, or you risk wearing this one. The burn line is sharp and well-controlled. It’s pretty even side to side with only a mild waviness. In the second half, there was one little section of the roll that required a little extra attention as it wasn’t burning quite as well, but only a minor touch-up was needed.
Flavor Profile (0-5): Excellent (5)
It’s an interesting profile immediately off light-up. Sourdough breadiness and very salty, especially on the lips and tongue. It’s a bit like salted roasted peanuts, but the nutty flavor trends more toward a toasted almond. There’s a light earthiness to it and some baking spice with hints of red pepper. But then that pepper quickly ramps up in intensity, developing a heavy mix of black pepper. Saltiness is hitting the tongue and lips, while the pepper is hitting the soft palate and the back of the throat. There’s an acidic zing to all of it that reminds me of the way your mouth feels after eating a spicy salsa with salty chips. But there’s also a nice, medium creaminess to it that brings a little savory thickness to the smoke. I sometimes talk about how the perceptions of our other senses are influenced heavily by our eyes. I’m reading the name Ocean Breeze, knowing that it’s inspired by the Pura Vida lifestyle to relax and live a simple life, looking at the imagery and colors on the band… and now all I can do is think about sitting on the beach eating chips, salsa, and guacamole with these flavor profiles. 😂
The second third brings a reduction in pepper and a slight shift in the overall spice. It leans more toward a baking spice with a mix of earthy and aromatic notes like nutmeg (nutty, earthy, and sweet), cardamom (sweet, minty), and ginger (pungent, zesty, and sweet). So it’s a dry sweetness that really tingles the mouth, particularly when paired with that salty note. The breadiness is developing a little bit of a barley note to it as well. Earthiness, toasted almonds, baking cocoa, and light cedar are making up the base notes of the profile, leaving it a little darker and drier. The creaminess isn’t quite as strong, so it is not quite as thick and rich on the finish as it was in the first third. But I’m seriously digging the blend and it’s bringing a highly unique mix of flavors.
The final third still sees a strong mix of earthy baking spice and returning black pepper, with a little less breadiness and more cedar. Dark, dry, and moderately creamy on the finish, it really is a very relaxing blend that’s wonderfully accentuated by the spice and sweet zest. There are occasional slight notes of leather, but that just adds a dry smoothness that seamlessly blends into that barley breadiness. The uniqueness of the blend is genuinely intriguing and is a huge part of what makes this so enjoyable. One last punch of pepper perfectly accentuates the finish of this smoke.
Overall Experience (0-5): Excellent (5)
Nuanced, complex, and highly balanced, this blend stands far apart from the other Lamperts I’ve tried so far. It definitely embraces that Pura Vida vibe Lampert talks about in their marketing material. All I want to do now is go straight back to Jamaica and smoke one of these bad boys on the beach. ⛱️
