The Review

This review for the La Flor Dominicana La Nox - Toro (6.5 x 50) is based on the journal entry dated 2025-07-22

Appearance & Construction (0-3):  Good (3)

Another dripper, though I’m genuinely curious if it’ll stain my hand like the Reserva Especial did. I say “dripper” because La Nox is a super dark chocolate brown that’s just shining with heavy oil, while still showing heavy mottling and sporadic spots of large tooth. It has several visible, thinner veins, but the seams are tight and the triple cap is clean and evenly applied. It has great firmness and the wrapper itself feels thick and crunchy. If you didn’t already know that La Nox translates to “the night,” the Van Gogh inspired style and font on the band should definitely get the point across.

Draw (0-3) & Burn (0-4):  Good (3) / Great (4)

The draw has a little extra resistance but is still quite good. The burn starts nicely and settles into a dead-even char line quickly. The ash is a light-to-medium gray with tight, even striations and a nice spread of oil crystals mixed in. The ash holds perfectly through the first third before I gently rolled it off into the ashtray. The burn line occasionally develops some waves, but it stays even from side to side. No touch-ups, no corrections—just a great burn.

Flavor Profile (0-5):  Excellent (5)

Initial flavors are earth and a musty barnyard funk, backed by some dark fruit sweetness and cocoa. There’s a light almond taste alongside that light, floral-like aromatic quality I always associate with Brazilian wrappers. Hints of black licorice and coffee swirl in with a light woodiness and bits of salt. It’s creamy, it’s sweet, it’s salty, it’s bitter, it’s savory… I might even be getting a little bit of sour in there, too. It’s off to an awesome start.

With the second third, some pepper finally appears. It’s mild, but it adds a nice little punch of heat to liven things up. The earth, barnyard, and licorice flavors still drive the profile, with cocoa, raisin sweetness, and charred cedar playing supporting roles. Chill. This is a very chill blend. There’s a charred smokiness to this cigar that I find uniquely appealing. Sometimes that transitions into strong BBQ-type flavors, but combined with the black licorice bitterness, it creates an interesting, delightful combination that brings a slight—but not quite full-on—hickory vibe. We’re missing the heavy spice, but definitely not the smoke.

The complexity of the flavors and the balance they’re striking here is fantastic. Everybody in the profile is playing nice, holding hands, and singing kumbaya. Nobody licked the palm of their hand first or picked their nose. It’s all carrying straight through the final third for a grand finish.

This is a cigar that’s been out for a decade now and has been smoked by basically everybody to absolutely rave reviews. Go ahead and add me to the list as a +1 for that party. Fantastic smoke. 🔥 If you’re one of the few who hasn’t smoked La Nox yet, you need to see about changing that immediately.
