The Review

This review for the La Flor Dominicana Solis - Toro (6.5 x 50) is based on the journal entry dated 2025-07-22

Appearance & Construction (0-3):  Good (3)

The Solis has a warm, medium-brown wrapper that completely exudes that worn leather look. There’s a nice sheen, great color variation, and heavy mottling. There are a number of thin veins and small lumps from the binder layer underneath, but it’s still a fairly smooth roll with excellent firmness. The seams are visible but tight all the way around, capped off with a clean, even head. The style and colors of the band don’t necessarily jump out at me, but they definitely provide a well-executed visual counterbalance to the dark, brooding theme of La Nox.

Draw (0-3) & Burn (0-4):  Average (2) / Great (4)

The draw has some extra resistance but remains acceptable and not annoyingly tight. The burn starts nicely and settles into a dead-even burn line fairly quickly. The ash is a light gray with dark, even striations, though it is a little bit flaky. Still, it held incredibly well, making it all the way to the midpoint of the smoke before I gently rolled it into the ashtray.

Flavor Profile (0-5):  Excellent (5)

Lots of nuttiness to start, alongside some earth and woodiness, backed by a strong honey sweetness and a rich, creamy finish. There’s baking spice, mild cocoa, some grassiness, and a toasty breadiness with hints of a really refined leather. I’m honestly surprised by just how thick and creamy this one is out of the gate. It’s off to a fantastic start.

Getting into the second third, there are no major changes. This cigar seems to have found its sweet spot early and is just comfortably cruising. Smooth, creamy, rich, with absolutely zero harshness or bitterness—I’m really digging this. It’s hitting the exact right mix of cedar, cashew, earth, leather, cocoa, and honey. It’s not an overly aggressive flavor bomb at this point, and I’m not really getting the “Full” strength that was advertised; it feels more solidly medium, though the intensity appears to be steadily increasing. Right at the midway point, pepper starts to appear—just enough to bring a nice tingle to the tongue. There’s also a very thick, chewy mouthfeel that’s highly interesting and completely separate from the creaminess.

The earthiness confidently takes the lead going into the final third, but the supporting flavors don’t fall back much at all. Combined with the woodiness, leather, and baking spice, this profile basically tastes like autumn. Dry leaves, spiced drinks, and gingerbread cookies are all vibing perfectly together. This is a really enjoyable blend that stays incredibly balanced while building strength through the entirety of the smoke. I always appreciate a blend that smoothly ramps up, and this one absolutely hits that advertised full strength right at the very end.

Overall Experience (0-5):  Excellent (5)

With a name like Solis, I came into this expecting something a bit lighter—something perfectly appropriate for a sunny, summer day smoke. But this actually strikes me as a pure celebration of Sun Grown tobacco, fully embracing those darker flavors to deliver a profile that is earthy, hearty, and deeply rich. A phenomenally solid blend and a very enjoyable smoke.
