Prolegomenon and Other Random Thoughts
Okay, story time! I found myself at PCA this year (I’ll talk about that another time) and it was getting late on Sunday afternoon. I was getting ready to wrap up my day and found myself walking by the Dunbarton booth on the way toward the exit. My friends at the Smoke & Steel podcast had always talked about how Steve Saka was one of their absolute wish-list guests to have on the show. I think Steve spends his whole time at PCA doing interviews because every time I walked by, he was in front of a camera speaking with somebody at his desk.
As I’m walking by the entrance, there’s a lovely couple standing at the podium and I see the name on the badge… Chris Duque. I’ve heard of that name, I smoked that cigar once! So I took the opportunity to introduce myself and say hello to El Duque, who, I have to say, is a complete treasure. Chris might be one of the warmest and nicest people I’ve ever met who treats total strangers like old friends, it’s no wonder he had a cigar dedicated to him. I spent some time making small talk with Chris and his wife, and I asked him to settle a bet. Eric and Walt from Smoke & Steel were positive they were too small for Steve to pay them any mind or do the show. I asked Chris if he thought Steve would do their podcast if I actually had the chance to ask him. Steve happened to be wrapping up with his previous conversation (I think it was Cigar Prop?), and Chris tells me he’ll ask Steve if he has a minute to talk to me so I can ask him myself! Well, shit. Okay!
Steve was incredibly gracious and granted me his limited free time between interviews. In the process of introducing myself, I say I’ve recently launched a website for my cigar reviews, blah, blah, blah… Steve thought that was great because having independent reviewers like myself out there democratizes the process (much appreciated!), but I also happened to mention that I’ve only been seriously smoking for two years and apologized that I hadn’t really dove into his portfolio yet. Full disclosure, I started dabbling in 2022 but didn’t fall hard for the hobby until 2024. So yeah, it’s been about two years and I had the absolute nerve to launch my review website in 2026, lol. 😁
Steve gives me this look. If you’ve met him in person, you probably know the look… He goes, “Don’t take this the wrong way, but don’t smoke my stuff.”
To quote Bricktop, “In the quiet words of the Virgin Mary, come again?” 😂
And before anybody gets bent out of shape, it was not a “fuck off, n00b” or a statement about how I’m not good enough for Dunbarton. Steve went on to say that he felt, as an enthusiast, I really needed more experience and perspective to best appreciate his blends—like 10 years of smoking other cigars. I might be paraphrasing or slightly exaggerating because he explicitly said he didn’t want to sound braggadocious, but he also didn’t want to “ruin” me if I started smoking Dunbarton too early in my journey.
To be fair, I can see how your casual enthusiast might take years to smoke 1,000 different cigars. But not everybody has that neurodivergent tic that I do to go hard and deep on my hobbies. It’d be one thing to say I’ve smoked nearly 900 cigars in the past two years, but I’ve also photographed, journaled, and written profiles and notes for all of them. Steve’s friendly advice, while I appreciated the bravado and intent, was taken more like a dropped gauntlet. CHALLENGE ACCEPTED.
Probably not his intent, but oh well. 😂 So here we are. I had a couple of Dunbartons in my queue and I had to decide which one to link this story to. Since the Todos Las Dias is specifically aimed at “experienced smokers,” it felt like the right one. I’m sure by now, if Steve is actually reading this, he’s like, who the fuck is this guy again? And to add insult to injury, he now has to decide if he wants to read my shitty review. 😁 I highly recommend reading it on the toilet. It’s the perfect length for a poop break! Unless you’re a slow pooper, but then there’s plenty of other stuff on my website to read, too!
Oooooh, so regarding the Smoke & Steel podcast. You old heads probably already know this, but Steve is a self-described “interview whore” and can’t say no to anybody. Super gracious and absolutely willing to do the pod, he gave explicit instructions on what the guys needed to do to schedule him. I dutifully passed that exact information along to them and got, “Oh, he’s going to be at Smoke-ono’s, we’ll talk to him then!” WTF guys… And guess what? They chickened out at Smoke-ono’s! I already told them I was going to put them on blast for it. And Steve, I owe you an apology because you were gracious enough to grant me time at PCA on their behalf, and they got cold feet. Sigh… I love those guys, but also, what a bunch of chickenshits! 😅

The Review
This review for the Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust Todos Las Dias 2026 (Double Wide Belicoso) - Belicoso (4.75 x 60) is based on the journal entry dated 2026-06-20
Appearance & Construction (0-3): Good (3)
This vitola exists in a weird place. It’s not quite a pig or a nub, but it has the large ring gauge of a Gordo that’s accentuated by the tapered Belicoso head, all while landing just short of a full five inches. It’s literally the cigar manifestation of guys who say a lack of length is offset by girthiness. The Sun Grown Cuban-seed Nicaraguan leaf is thick, oily, and heavily mottled. Your fingers genuinely feel slightly oily after handling this cigar. It’s a medium to dark chocolate brown with hints of orange to it. Even though there are a number of visible veins, none are too thick, and the cigar has tight, clean seams all over. I quite like the black and silver double bands. The footband features the full Todos Las Dias spelled out, while the main band has a monogram-style logo—hence the big “D” right in the middle. That wasn’t a dick joke like the one about the vitola, but you’re not wrong for expecting one from me. 😁
Draw (0-3) & Burn (0-4): Good (3) / Good (3)
The large ring gauge takes a little more effort to toast the foot and get the burn going, but it eventually gets there. The draw is spot-on, and we’re off. The burn line is wavy to start, with a couple of sections burning at different rates, but it’s well-controlled out of the gate. The ash is a nearly white, light gray with tight striations and tight spacing between the cracks. It gets progressively flakier as it cools, but it’s only dropping a few small pieces.
The burn line keeps vacillating between flat and wavy. There’s one section that likes to drag and then catch up, while the rest of the burn is nearly dead-nuts straight. It’s not enough to canoe, and as that one section dragged, the burn line started to cut in from the sides around it, eventually surrounding that unburned piece with ash until it finally fell off. And with that, the burn line was nice and even once again. Smoke levels on this one are copious, and a massive amount of smoke pours from both ends at times.
Flavor Profile (0-5): Excellent (5)
Immediate dark chocolate, a light raisin sweetness, and a cookie breadiness. It’s almost exactly like a Fig Newton—and fun fact, I absolutely love fruit Newtons. Sweetness starts to build very nicely and actually becomes an early, dominant note in the profile, getting thicker and more syrupy. I’m getting bits of black and white pepper, but more nutmeg and cinnamon that leads into a dry earthiness and mild coffee note. It’s interesting because the sweetness is thick and syrupy, lingering on my tongue, while the rest of the profile remains firmly on the drier side. As I get into the second inch, the pepper intensity is growing, but there hasn’t been a lick of harshness—just a nice burn growing on both my tongue and soft palate. It has a moderately creamy finish and an overall nice smoothness that makes it really pleasant to smoke. I’d say this blend slaps, but if you’re just over 4 inches long and quite girthy, I don’t think you can get enough movement to actually make that slapping noise. 😂
Because this is a chode vitola, I’m just going to talk about this one in halves. The second half doesn’t bring any massive transitions or new flavor notes, just increasing intensity and strength. The blend is full force now, with that Fig Newton flavor of breadiness and raisiny fig sweetness driving the profile alongside a strong mix of pepper and baking spices. I’m really digging this blend. Charred oak, dark chocolate, coffee, earth, and a light dry mustiness with that medium creaminess round out the profile. A fantastic blend for those who like bold, unapologetic profiles.
Overall Experience (0-5): Excellent (5)
As I mentioned before, the Dunbarton website lists this cigar as being exclusively for seasoned smokers. I guess I’m seasoned enough, as I really enjoyed it, but it didn’t completely ruin me to the point where I can only smoke DT&T cigars like Sakadamus had foretold, or put me on my ass. 😂 But I’m incredibly glad this blend made a return, and it’s definitely one I’ll look for in future releases. I also managed to find some of the 2023 “Thick Lonsdale” vitolas, so I’m looking forward to comparing the two and seeing how this blend performs in a thinner ring gauge. But if you like a cigar that can punch you in the chest, definitely check this one out.
Hopefully, this means Steve will let me smoke his cigars with his blessing now. 🤞🏻😄
