Prolegomenon and Other Random Thoughts

Anybody who has smoked Foundation knows that Nick Melillo loves the culture and history of Egypt, and a lot of it pops up in the Foundation cigar lineup. What you might not know is that Highclere Castle was the home of George Edward Stanhope Molyneux Herbert, 5th Earl of Carnarvon. According to Wikipedia, he is “best known as the financial backer of the search for and excavation of Tutankhamun’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings.” King Tut’s tomb was discovered in 1922, and the Highclere Castle Senetjer commemorates the 100th anniversary. “Senetjer” is the ancient Egyptian word for incense or “that which makes holy,” and the box they come in is a replica of a storage box from Tut’s tomb. History is fun, right?

The Review

This review for the Foundation Highclere Castle Senetjer - Perfecto (6.75 x 52) is based on the journal entry dated 2025-11-14

Appearance & Construction (0-3):  Good (3)

This is an eye-catching cigar. It features an oily, warm, and reddish milk chocolate brown wrapper that has lots of soft tooth, giving it a softer texture that’s rolled into a beautiful and long perfecto. Add in the purple and gold band, and it really stands out. There are very few veins on the wrapper, the seams are tight and blend in nicely, and the cap is neat and clean. It’s a beautiful roll.

Draw (0-3) & Burn (0-4):  Good (3) / Good (3)

The draw is tight to start, as is usually the case with a perfecto and the tapered foot, but it opens up beautifully once the burn gets past the tip. The burn starts evenly and is well-controlled, but with a pronounced wave that slowly improves. The ash is a very light gray, nearly white, that has some feathering and wide spacing between the cracks. The ash holds just past the first third before falling.

Flavor Profile (0-5):  Excellent (5)

Immediate hits of pepper, baking spice, and cedar on light-up with a honey sweetness that’s very creamy. Peanut shells, chocolate, mild leather, and earth join in, and the blend is on fire. It’s a little bit drier, and there’s a light breadiness, but there’s great complexity. I’m guilty of just enjoying this cigar and not focusing on the review, because I had barely written a half-paragraph about the blend before I realized I had burned past the halfway point. 😅 There haven’t been any major transitions, but this is a blend that starts strong out the gate and has been bulldozing forward ever since.

So, where are we? Cedar with mild pepper, some mild breadiness with a good helping of peanut shell, strong baking spice composed of cinnamon and nutmeg, hearty espresso and chocolate, mild earth and leather, strong honey sweetness with bits of citrus bite, and a medium creamy finish. It’s a little dry, and it burns quickly, but it’s well-balanced and smooth with just the littlest bit of pepper harshness and burn. This is an excellent blend that’s crisp and sharp.

Overall Experience (0-5):  Excellent (5)

I smoked the Foundation 10 Year Aniversario yesterday. This is the yin to the 10’s yang. Two expensive, but well-blended cigars that offer complementary flavor profiles that cover the entire flavor wheel. I always wish these super-premium cigars were more affordable, but the Senetjer is worth the cost of entry IMO. You know I hate disappointing expensive cigars, and I would be “incensed” if the Senetjer was one. Rimshot. But lucky for us, it’s not!
