My immediate reaction to seeing this cigar next to other cigars from Warped and Gellis Family is… meh? It’s just a little boring if I’m being honest, but it’s made at Tabacalera La iSLA and in Hostos we trust, because he helps turn out a large number of bangers. But this Ecuadorian Sumatra comes with a milk chocolate color carrying the requisite rosado red hue. It looks dry, feels dry and crunchy, and has a rough texture like sandpaper from the light tooth and thin but notable veins. The roll itself looks good overall with tight seams, a clean triple cap, and good firmness. But the band is rather unappealing and the whole presentation is just underwhelming. On appearance alone, I don’t see people eagerly reaching for these in the humidor. Sorry, not sorry? 🤷🏻‍♂️ But as always, all is forgiven if the actual blend delivers.​

Draw (0-3) & Burn (0-4):  Average (2) / Good (3)

The cap doesn’t want to release cleanly after hitting it with my PerfecPunch, taking a little extra effort to remove. The draw is also on the tighter side of acceptable, so it’s not exactly a great start. The burn line, however, is even, balanced, and with only a bit of a wave to it—nicely controlled. The ash is a very light gray, creating tight and narrowly spaced striations that are holding well. The ash holds strong until the end of the first third where I gracefully rolled it off into the tray for a relight. If this one needs multiple relights, I’m not holding the cigar accountable today because it’s a humid, Louisiana summer day and it’s looking like heavy storms are rolling in soon. Yeah, it feels like walking straight into a sweaty armpit out here. 🤢

Flavor Profile (0-5):  Average (2)

Immediate, intense red pepper that’s bordering on harsh, hitting with a good mix of strong earth, cinnamon, medium baking spice, cocoa powder, and a lot of cedar. The Sumatra wrapper is hitting hard right out of the gate. But, I’m still very much at meh… The red pepper is shifting to black and it’s still bordering on harsh, hitting all areas of the mouth and soft palate. I’m still not getting any new flavors as I’m nearing the end of the first third. Meh is officially turning into pleh…

Into the second third, it is still cedar and earth-heavy with a lot of black and red pepper that’s edging on overkill and harshness. The supporting flavors are still cinnamon and cocoa powder, but I’m starting to get some espresso and dried fruit. The dried fruit is a mix between a raisin and a dehydrated sweet apple, but it’s not very sweet. There’s a tiny bit of creaminess to it, but not nearly enough to offset the pepper by coating the mouth. My entire mouth and soft palate are getting numb from the pepper and I’m only at the halfway point. More sweetness or creaminess would certainly help, because I’m salivating like RFK Jr. looking at a fresh roadkill dinner. 🤤

Getting into the final third and I’m definitely getting bored with this blend. The red and black pepper combination is just below overwhelming, but it’s completely overpowering the other notes in the blend. So I’m stuck with earth, cedar, cinnamon, espresso, baking cocoa, and dried fruit. This isn’t bad, but it’s dry and highly underwhelming. My mouth and soft palate are definitely numb, and honestly, I’m feeling the exact same way about this entire smoke. Pleh to eh…

If this blend was the winner of three choices that 12 elite retailers actually agreed upon, I am insanely curious what the hell the other two options were. There is way too much pepper that sits entirely off-balance with the other flavor notes, drowning them out and resulting in a really monotonous blend that just doesn’t bring any excitement and offers zero complexity. Pepper freaks may love this, but it just doesn’t have the balance or flavor to make me ever want to come back to it. Oh well, tomorrow is a new day and I can hopefully smoke something better. 🥁ba-dum-tss 🥁😆
