Prolegomenon and Other Random Thoughts
I’m sure most people already know that Tatuaje and My Father work together closely, as the My Father factory has been producing most, if not all, of the Tatuaje lineup since Tatuaje was founded back in 2003. Tatuaje was even My Father’s first private label customer. What you might not know is that Pete Johnson of Tatuaje is married to Janny Garcia of My Father. If you aren’t familiar with Janny, you absolutely should be. She’s a powerhouse in the My Father organization as their Vice President and the daughter of Don “Pepin” Garcia. So obviously, the two brands have an incredibly strong relationship, and the La Union project feels like a very natural extension of that. The La Union logo is actually a drawing of Pete Johnson and Jaime Garcia shaking hands, with the hand of Don Pepin Garcia blessing the partnership.
But I’ll be honest, this is a seriously confusing release to keep straight. There are two different pairs of cigars offered in two different humidors, making for four unique blends in total. The Black humidor was the first release from 2024, and the Red humidor was the second release from 2025. For the matched pair from each humidor, one cigar is a Tatuaje blend “for My Father” and the other is a My Father blend “Para Tatuaje,” but all the cigars are made at the My Father factory and heavily feature tobaccos from the Garcia family farms.
While they’re technically Double Coronas sporting a 109-style bullet cap, My Father is officially calling the vitola a “Prominente Especial.” The Tatuaje cigars also feature a closed foot that the My Father cigars don’t have. And if you need any more help keeping them straight, the Black humidor cigars have a reddish-orange foot band, while the Red humidor cigars have a yellow foot band.
But shit, these bad boys are expensive. MSRP is $60 EACH, which means it’s $120 for a pair since most retailers are not selling them individually. I get why they’re doing it, because if one blend is 🔥while the other is 💩 they’ll get stuck with half a humidor of a very expensive cigar. And to really appreciate the concept of “La Union” you need to try both cigars. So these blends need to be absolutely memorable, because that is a hell of a buy-in.

The Review
This review for the My Father & Tatuaje La Union - Tatuaje for My Father (Black Humidor) - Double Corona (7.25 x 50) is based on the journal entry dated 2025-06-20
Appearance & Construction (0-3): Good (3)
This is another beautifully rolled cigar. The Nicaraguan Corojo is a very light brown, oily leaf with good sheen and nice mottling, but no tooth. The veins are thin and light, with only a couple of noticeable ones running through the wrapper. Like the other My Father cigar of this La Union, the seams are tight and the cap is beautifully done. This has the same hybrid head along with the primary and foot band. The secondary band says “For My Father,” and is gold on black with silver edging. Other than the much lighter leaf used, the other key difference in appearance between the two is that the Tatuaje cigar has a closed foot.
Draw (0-3) & Burn (0-4): Average (2) / Good (3)
The draw is perfect and the burn starts well enough, but goes uneven quickly. The ash is a very light gray with tight bands. By the second inch, the burn is evening out some, but is still pretty wavy. By the end of the first third, it fully evens out, only having a slight wave to the burn line. The ash holds well until the second third, nearly reaching the second band before giving out and falling. I do find the draw tightens up significantly in the second half—not quite enough to need the draw tool to open things up, but damn close to it.
Flavor Profile (0-5): Great (4)
It’s like Almond Joy and Mounds: sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don’t. Hopefully you do, because nuttiness is the first flavor to greet you. It’s very peanuty, paired with a strong baking spice—heavy on the cinnamon—and a pleasant cedar woodiness. I’m getting both cinnamon and white pepper in the spice mix, though it leans more toward the cinnamon and earthy baking spice. The pepper isn’t anywhere near the level of the MF blend. There’s also a citrusy sweet zest and a good, thick creaminess. There are hints of earth, coffee, and chocolate, but just traces. Nuts and wood are absolutely dominating the first third with hints of dry hay. Nuts and wood… sometimes the jokes just write themselves. 😅
With the second third, no real changes occur. It’s still driving with the heavy peanut and cedar profile that’s accented by that cinnamon-heavy spice. The biggest shift is a little bit of red pepper added to the mix, while the earth, espresso, and chocolate pick up to bring a mild mocha vibe with hints of sourdough that mixes with the lemon zest. This is good, but it’s noticeably lacking the complexity and robustness of the My Father for Tatuaje blend. At the midway point, the red pepper picks up a bit, but it’s medium at most, just providing a shot of extra flavor. The creamy finish is preventing any harshness, so it’s just a nice tingle on the lips and tongue. Right now, I’m kind of wishing it was a Robusto, only because I’m feeling like it’ll get a little boring by the final third.
No real changes happen in the final third, except for some increasing white pepper. Overall, this blend is very consistent throughout, which is kind of crazy considering the massive size of it.

The Tatuaje for My Father is a nice blend, but it falls short of the My Father cigar. Unfortunately, that makes the value proposition here even worse because when you look at the $60 price tag, it’s a tough, nutty tasting 7.5” long pill to swallow. But I can’t really advocate for breaking up the set; I think that’s a big part of the appeal and definitely their intent with this release. To me, this is a grouping that’s ideal for celebrations or special events where you can share one half of the pair with somebody else. And if it were me, I would hand this specific cigar to the person who prefers less spice and more wood and nuttiness in a blend. Then you can ask them how they like sucking on your woody nuts. 😂 But in all seriousness, if I have to choose just one, I’m going with the My Father cigar all day.
