Prolegomenon and Other Random Thoughts
It’s starting to feel like every few years another Espada would spring forth from the loins of the ongoing collaboration between Altadis USA and Plasencia. Well, it had been four years, and 2023 was no exception as Altadis brought in Rafael Nodal to co-blend alongside the Grupo de Maestros. Just like the first three, this is a 100% Nicaraguan puro crafted in the Plasencia factory—but they opted for a specialized Colorado Claro wrapper from the Jalapa Valley, making it the lightest-colored cigar in the lineup. Like the Estoque, the Signature is only offered in one vitola, a 6×55 Gran Toro known as the “Valiente.” That is Spanish for brave, but you don’t have to be brave with the Signature, as it was the lightest strength offering as well, stepping down from full strength to medium.

The Review
This review for the Montecristo Espada Signature (Valiente) - Gran Toro (6 x 55) is based on the journal entry dated 2026-09-05
Appearance & Construction (0-3): Good (3)
It starts with the look of old leather. It’s a medium, warm chocolate brown, but a lighter tan around the veins. There’s some mottling and a light sheen, but it has a slightly dry, smooth-feeling texture. There’s no visible tooth and the veins are all thin. It’s actually quite nondescript, but the construction looks good with tight seams, relatively no edge lift or gaps, and a clean cap. The off-white, brown, and gold bands hark back more to the traditional Montecristo look than the other Espadas. You’d hardly know it was an Espada because the band design is so radically different.
Draw (0-3) & Burn (0-4): Good (3) / Great (4)
The draw is spot-on and the burn starts cleanly. The ash is a light-to-medium gray with very tight striations that are just slightly darker. The burn line is relatively even side-to-side, but very wavy with tight little ripples running through it. They’re so tight I’m reminded of the curling break of the waves in The Great Wave off Kanagawa. But then the burn line decides to flatten out and the waves dissipate. From there on out, it holds a nearly dead-even burn line right to the midpoint. I think the ash could have held on longer, but it falls off while I’m trying to remove the large, secondary band. A superb stack.
Flavor Profile (0-5): Great (4)
Immediate hits of cinnamon, baking spice, and white pepper on light-up that quickly settle in. I’m getting a base mix of chocolate cocoa powder, dry earth, and strong cedar as well. The white pepper falls off in the first inch, uncovering espresso flavors and a light, mild nuttiness that’s quite pleasant. The sweet flavors are like brown sugar and maple syrup with bits of citrus zest that are all wrapped up in a smooth and creamy finish. Past the first inch, it’s still very cedar- and earth-heavy, featuring a mix of earth, leather, and mild chocolate at this point. What’s interesting is that even though it’s sweet, smooth, and creamy on the finish, my mouth feels slightly dry after each draw.
With the second third, the coffee flavors are pulling back while the cedar notes ramp up. It’s a lightly toasted cedar with the baking spice and pepper starting to come back into the fold. Earth and leather still support but don’t dominate, while the cocoa comes back into the mix with more strength, giving it a mocha quality. It’s creamy and smooth, but missing just a little kick to the sweetness levels. There’s a hay-like grassiness that provides some of that natural sweetness, but it’s not strong or fruity. The final third really keeps the exact same flavors going, with the espresso and toasted cedar actively trading off to see which will be the driving flavor of the profile.
So where did we end up with this straight shooter? Strong toasted cedar and cocoa; medium-plus earth, cinnamon, spice, and creaminess; medium espresso, leather, and sweetness; and light hay, nuttiness, and white pepper. Really nicely balanced, just complex enough, in a medium-strength flavor blend that strikes me as a great option to pair with your morning coffee.
Overall Experience (0-5): Excellent (5)
Much like the Plasencia Reserva Original, this is a cigar that really challenges the common stereotypes of a Nicaraguan puro. Light, sweet, woody, creamy, and well-balanced with a nice complexity of flavor. This isn’t a cigar that pummels you with strength, heaviness, or tons of spice, but it is still incredibly rich and satisfying. We already know it’s a Plasencia with a Montecristo label on it, but is that a bad thing? If anything, it’s a nice addition to the Espada lineup that stands exceptionally well on its own. It competes with the original Espada natural as my favorite of the lineup. But like the rest of the Espada lines, the heavy discounts you can easily find online heavily undercut the value proposition at MSRP. This one is genuinely good enough to be worth buying closer to full MSRP, but I’d still be looking for a sale.
