Prolegomenon and Other Random Thoughts
Definition released this cigar without much fanfare about a month before PCA 2026. That’s notable because they had 4 new releases for PCA: the Kinsman Toro, the Pi5ot, the One13, and the LACC exclusive Big Iron. I was initially worried that maybe the sequel didn’t live up to the expectations set by the original, and that’s why this cigar was not part of the PCA drop. But it turns out this cigar was intended for release much earlier, in January of 2026 but was delayed several months. A January release would’ve made a lot more sense and filled the gap between PCA and some of the late 2025 releases. So, no fears that this release was being quietly dropped because maybe it wasn’t up to snuff.
Now, I’m sure you’re also wondering what differentiates the maduro from the natural? The maduro version of the Prolific replaces the Ecuadorian Habano wrapper with Mexican San Andrés. I’m assuming the filler was tweaked to optimize the blend, but we don’t have any real details beyond that. Either way, let’s fire it up!

The Review
This review for the Definition Prolific BP Maduro (Yellow Band) - Toro (Box Press) (6.5 x 54) is based on the journal entry dated 2026-04-12
Appearance & Construction (0-3): Good (3)
So, let’s address the elephant in the room. The Maduro and regular Habano-wrapped Prolific are not that far apart in shade. Looking at boxes of the two side-by-side, some of them are almost identical in color, while others are more obvious. But since they use the same band, the only real indicator that one is the Maduro is to be eagle-eyed and look for the slight increase in tooth from the Mexican San Andrés wrapper the Maduro uses. My advice—and you better hope your tobacconist does this too—is to mark the back side of the band with a Sharpie or something so you know which is which. IMO, it’s important because when I first saw the Prolific Maduros I ordered sitting in my locker, I thought they were the Habano until they pointed out the Sharpie marks on the backside. Shops like LACC mark their cigars as they inspect their boxes to ensure that they don’t get the Habano and Maduro versions confused. 👍🏻But take a quick look at the photo here. Natural next to the maduro. A dark natural or a light maduro will look nearly identical. Are you sure you know which one is which? 😉
So as noted, the MSA is a medium chocolate brown that is only marginally darker than the regular Ecuadorian Habano in some examples. But it’s toothy, has a light sheen, and light mottling. The leaf looks to be on the thick side, so the cap creases and has a lot of edge lift in the corners of the box press, but the rest of the seams are tight. The box press is on the more aggressive side, giving you that candy bar shape, but it does press all the veins in flat. I always love the unique bands that Definition uses, but a little extra something to more clearly indicate the Maduro vs. the Habano would be nice. Let me know if you can figure out which is the maduro in the first photo.
Draw (0-3) & Burn (0-4): Good (3) / Good (3)
The draw is perfect and the burn starts without any issues. The ash is nearly bright white with minimal cracking in it to start. The char line is a little broader, but the burn line, which had started unevenly, is settling nicely and getting more even side-to-side with time. The ash, which started very tight, is now starting to feather slightly, but it’s not flaking off and making a mess. The ash also started to develop tight cracks that are widely spaced, and occasionally a hint of ash falls as it’s still feathering. The burn line never gets to dead-even, but it’s been pretty well-controlled the entire burn.
Flavor Profile (0-5): Excellent (5)
Mmm… Dark chocolate, baking cocoa, and cinnamon to start. Earth, cedar, and red pepper quickly join the party. Pepper actually ramps up quite quickly, giving this one a lot of bite early on, as it becomes more black pepper hitting the back of the throat. I’m reminded of that spicy Mexican chili pepper chocolate that burns while also being very chocolatey. I’m not getting a lot of sweetness at the moment—some mild honey and citrus zing, but not a ton. It’s smooth, with only a bit of pepper harshness, but not as creamy as I would’ve hoped at this point. The profile is starting off on the drier side.
The second third starts to pick up the strength on the sweetness, a mix of honey and lemon that is quite enjoyable. Some of the other key flavors I experienced in the regular Prolific, like coffee and cedar, are getting more intense as well. Pepper has dialed things back a little to a more manageable level. If things held like the first third, it would’ve been a turnoff for anybody who dislikes pepper bombs 🌶️💣. But at the midway point, this blend is really starting to hit its stride. We’re back to Mexican hot chocolate and I do love that shit! 😂🤤 At times I’m getting a bit of saltiness off the wrapper, but it’s on point. Balance and complexity are pleasing.
And of course, right after typing that, the cigar gods heard me and red pepper and cinnamon pick up while black pepper falls off. This is perfect because just past the midpoint I’m getting a flavorful mouth and tongue tingle without any of the back-of-the-palate harshness. Flavor country, bitches. Sweetness is also in full force, leaving a delightful citrus zing and thicker honey aftertaste between puffs.
This carries into the final third at the start. Really nice intensity of the flavors; I’m digging the balance of baking cocoa, sweetness, and spice here. Still mildly earthy, a good amount of cedar, and slight breadiness. Any pepper harshness has disappeared in spite of the strong intensity it has. Coffee has picked up a hair, but it’s still on the mild side.
Overall Experience (0-5): Excellent (5)
A fantastic update to the original Prolific Habano. This retains the spirit of the original while adding extra flavors that the Habano lacked. I’ll need to eventually smoke both back-to-back, or maybe even side-by-side, but this is well worth checking out if you wanted more spice and chocolate in the original Prolific blend.
