The Review

This review for the La Flor Dominicana Oro Maduro (No. 6) - Toro (6 x 54) is based on the journal entry dated 2025-07-24

Appearance & Construction (0-3):  Average (2)

LFD really has a knack for super dark and oily Maduros. This is another dark chocolate dripper that practically shines with an oily gloss and good mottling, though there is no noticeable tooth. This is a thicker leaf with thick veins and visible bulges from the binder layer underneath. The seams are visible with thick edges, and the triple cap has a few creases and folds. It’s a bit rustic-looking, but it feels like an absolute tank with great firmness and density.​

Draw (0-3) & Burn (0-4):  Average (2) / Great (4)

The draw is very tight to start. I was ready to grab the draw tool, but a little heat and some gentle finger-rolling opened it up to an acceptable level. The burn starts nicely with a char line that goes between razor-sharp and wavy, but it holds even and remains well-controlled. The ash is a light gray that browns as it cools, featuring tight banding and a little feathering. It holds well, making it nearly to the midpoint before I finally rolled it off.

Flavor Profile (0-5):  Excellent (5)

Earth, barnyard, cocoa, baking spice, and a dark fruit sweetness are all immediate out of the gate. When it comes to that distinct sweetness that only comes from the fermenting of a really good Maduro leaf, this cigar brings it in bunches. It’s very raisin-heavy, with maybe just a hint of black cherry. There’s a charred oakiness to the wood base, alongside a damp earth mixed with a nice musty barnyard funk. The chocolate note just deepens the earthiness, aided by some cinnamon and a mild pepper. There’s a mild hickory vibe coming from the light baking spice and pepper, but overall it’s dark, smooth, and rich with a super creamy finish.

By the second half, I’m getting more coffee and black licorice flavors, which brings in a high-quality bitter note and a light floral quality at times. It provides a fantastic contrast against that buttery, rich creaminess. The spice level hops between mild and medium—just enough for a little tingle and some extra flavor. There’s really great complexity within this blend and lots of robust flavors. This is a stick that’s sweet and meaty; it has a thick savoriness to it that is deeply enjoyable. It does dull out in the final inch, getting a bit mellow, but it remains a fantastic blend overall. This is a sneaky cigar, too; while it sits at a solid medium to medium-full in flavor intensity, the nicotine strength will absolutely catch up to you by the end.

Overall Experience (0-5):  Excellent (5)

This is a benchmark cigar, IMO, for dark, rich Maduro flavors featuring those traditional sweet and rich bitter notes. It’s right up there with the Ashton Aged Maduro and the Romey y Julieta 1875 Reserve Maduro. It’s a tough call between this and the La Nox if I had to choose just one, as they’re both fantastic, but I think I’d give La Nox the slight edge.
