Prolegomenon and Other Random Thoughts
Well, I would be remiss to not try all three of the standard HDA offerings in the same week to compare and contrast. That only left the Veiled Mutiny. I usually don’t look at other reviews before my own, I made the mistake of watching our friend Dave West review this cigar. I caught myself referencing himself in the review, mentioning the copout on spice. Whoops! 😂

The Review
This review for the Hermanos de Armas Veiled Mutiny - Toro (6 x 54) is based on the journal entry dated 2026-04-28
Appearance & Construction (0-3): Average (2)
The Veiled Mutiny has a striking, rich, oily, dark chocolate brown color that’s heightened by the stark contrast of the very light gray dual bands surrounding it. A thicker, heartier leaf, the veins on this cigar are pronounced with highly visible seams and raised edges. The triple cap on this one is sloppy, but sufficient. But it’s a super oily wrapper with a lot of sheen and light tooth. I don’t give a lot of notes on the smell of unlit cigars, but sweetness just emanates off this one. I still really like the simple but well-done bands HDA uses, but once again, the foot band is secured in a way that covers the name of the cigar. 🤷🏻♂️
Draw (0-3) & Burn (0-4): Average (2) / Poor (1)
The draw is perfect and the burn starts without issue. The burn line is fairly well-controlled, but wavy and burning at different rates. It self-corrects, then becomes uneven again. The ash is a medium gray with tight striations and gaps, accented by darker gray banding. The ash is splitting a bit at the foot, but not quite petaling. By the end of the first third, one section of the burn is lagging too far behind, so I dump the ash and give it the correction it needs. But the draw is tightening up a bit as well. Not enough to need the draw tool yet, but it might, though a finger roll at the head helps loosen things up. At the midway point, it’s starting to canoe again and is going to need a check-in. I believe they call this deficient conduct in the military? At least the burn behaved better in the final third until it went out. And then one more time in the last inch. WTF. Demerit!
Flavor Profile (0-5): Great (4)
Immediate charred oak, earth, and light barnyard, with red pepper and baking spice. Very mesquite-like out the gate. There’s a lot of spice here—pepper, cinnamon, and a full spice rack of intense and bold flavors. I’d swear I’m getting paprika and cumin. The cop-out is to call it “exotic spice,” but it’s more unique than that. This cigar is starting off bold. Coffee notes start to wake up, and the charred oak becomes more of a charred cedar. The sweetness is citrusy with hints of raisin, and the finish has a rich creaminess.
Getting into the second third, that initial intensity and brutality has died back a bit, but then returns with the relight. There’s a very interesting combination of both the charred cedar and an almost aromatic, potpourri-like quality to the spices I’m picking up. The citrusy sweetness is also picking up in intensity, along with more cinnamon and saltiness. There have really been no transitions, but this is a very interesting and unique blend. I’m not sure if it’s for my palate, as it gets a little harsh and acrid at times, but I’m still engaged in spite of the ongoing burn issues.
The final third starts to get a bit more harsh, burning the back of my throat. Red pepper has turned more black, and the fragrant charred cedar is back to smoky charred oak. There’s a little more acridity to it. Still sweet, still a medium creaminess on the finish, and still hitting with the exotic spice and bold flavors, though. But after it went out a second time in the final third, it was done.
Overall Experience (0-5): Average (2)
The burn issues really dragged this one down. Two major corrections and one relight were needed. Each third was marred by burn issues. But it’s a really unique and interesting blend. The interesting spice profile is genuinely engaging, but it got harsh for my palate at times. I’m hoping the next one brings a better experience, or it might get hard to recommend this cigar in spite of its interesting and engaging flavor profile.

Postscript
And this is exactly why we smoke two for a review. While the second cigar had a slightly flaky ash that crumbled at the foot, it held to the midway point of the cigar and didn’t have any of the burn issues of the first. It also brought all the flavor without the harshness, exhibiting more coffee and earth notes with a creamier finish. A much better and highly enjoyable experience!
